Long Haul Spa products are natural, sustainable, vegan and ethically sourced.  We believe in absolute transparency when it comes to our skincare products.

The majority of our ingredients are botanicals from New Zealand, however, there are a few very special ingredients that are grown in Africa and are available to us through our relationship with Essence of Humanity Trust, a registered New Zealand charity supporting So They Can.
Listed below are all the ingredients that are used in Long Haul Spa products, along with information on their background and purpose.

 

 

 

 

 






 

Adansonia Digitata (Baobab) Seed Oil - Vitamin Rich in A, D & E, high emollient and b-sitosterol (a plant sterol)  to aid dry and damaged skin. The Baobab is perhaps the best-known tree in Africa and grows in abundance in hot, dry lowland areas such as the Rift Valley. Its spreading crown of branches is bare of leaves for much of the year and reminiscent of a root system, hence the Baobab’s common name: ‘The Upside Down Tree’.   Baobab is known in Africa as The Tree of Life because there are many traditional uses for every part of it, from the leaves to the roots. The fruit powder is commonly with water and sugar to make a popular and refreshing sherbet-like drink. The powder is also used for porridge, sauces and other dishes and as a substitute for cream of tartar in baking, and as a fermenting agent in traditional brews.

Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Seed Oil - Kiwi seed oil contains high amounts of vitamin E, vitamin C and Omega-3 fatty acids.  Kiwi seed oil keeps skin healthy and deeply moisturised, and helps to boost collagen production. Packed with antioxidants, kiwi seed oil is also able to fight free radicals that lead to premature aging (pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles).   

Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Extract - An emollient popular for its cooling and calming properties. It helps to maintain moisture balance and is beneficial for soothing sensitivity and irritation.

Aqua – you guessed it - water.  But in Long Haul Spa’s case it’s Natural Spring Water from beautiful New Zealand.  Yeah!

Aspalathus Linearis (Rooibos) Leaf Extract - Scientifically known as Aspalathus linearis, rooibos is a member of the legume family of plants native to South Africa. You may know it as Rooibos tea.   Because of its high flavonoid content, Rooibos is a powerful anti-aging ingredient for skin care formulas. Rooibos is also known to be helpful for sensitive skin, protect against environmental stressors,and is a source of vitamin D and zinc.

Benzyl Alcohol - Benzyl alcohol is produced naturally by many plants and is commonly found in fruits and teas. It is also found in a variety of essential oils including jasmine, hyacinth, and ylang-ylang.  Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid with a mild pleasant aromatic odor. Benzyl Alcohol is a useful solvent due to its polarity, low toxicity, and low  vapor pressure.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) -  Rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A and E, as well as essential fatty acids, Shea Butter has a creamy colour and a very distinct smell. This historic ingredient has been used for centuries for its moisturizing, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties.

Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract - Green tea extract is derived from leaves of Camellia Sinensis. Green tea extract is naturally rich in antioxidants which protects the skin from the damaging effect of free radicals. Green tea extract also contains Methylxanthines that stimulates skin microcirculation and therefore positively influence skins tone and health.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride - Derived from vegetable matter (coconut and sustainable palm oil) it is a softening emollient that absorbs easily into the skin.

Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside - A sugar-based plant derived surfactant used to "solubilize" oils into water and other ingredients which typically are not capable of mixing. It is obtained from vegetable matter. Capryly and Capryl are names to describe fatty acid molecules of different length. 8 carbons long for Caprylyl and 10 for Capryl.  Just in case you were wondering.

Cetearyl Alcohol - Cetearyl Alcohol is a fatty alcohol that is a mixture of gentle cetyl and stearyl alcohols. It’s used as an emollient, texture enhancer, foam stabilizer, and carrying agent for other ingredients. Cetearyl Alcohol can be derived naturally, as in coconut fatty alcohol, or made synthetically.  Cosmetic products labeled "alcohol free" are allowed to contain cetearyl alcohol, whose effects are quite different from skin-aggravating forms of alcohol. Fatty alcohols like cetearyl alcohol do not pose a risk of sensitizing skin.

Cetearyl Olivate - Cetearyl Olivate is derived from olive oil. It offers the benefits of olive oil and it acts as an emulsifier. This dual utility makes the compound important in many natural skin care and hair care products. The compound is hypoallergenic so there is no threat to those who are otherwise allergic to certain emulsifiers and preservatives. The compound helps in containing the loss of water from the skin. As a result skin remains hydrated. Cetearyl Olivate moisturizes the skin and facilitates the emulsification of additional ingredients.

Citric Acid - Citric acid is a weak organic acid found in citrus fruits. It is a natural preservative and pH adjuster

Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Seed Oil -   Watermelon Seed Oil is known to have moisturizing, regenerating and restructuring properties. It contains Omega and Linoleic Acids, which helps in removal of excess sebum and cleanses the skin.  Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Seed Oil has more than 70% Omega 6 essential fatty acid content, increasing hydration and skin smoothness.

Citrus Medica Vulgaris Peel Oil - This oil has a fresh and light, slightly sharp fragrance, known to lift the spirits and is reputed to have antidepressant properties. Its antiseptic properties are useful in treating oily skin and to revive a dull complexion.

Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) WaterCoconut water has antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties that reduces the risk of acne causing microbial infection promoting clear and flawless skin.  Coconut Water also reduces the appearance of pores and naturally moisturizes your skin while regulating the pH of the skin maintaining hydration without excess oil.

Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Extract - This non-fragrant plant oil stimulates pathways in skin that lead to greater moisture retention and restores skin to a healthier, smoother look and feel.

Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax - Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, is obtained from the leaves of the Brazilian tropical palm tree and has been used instead of beeswax in our Lip Balm, in order to maintain our Vegan-ness :)

Cyathea Medullaris Leaf Extract - commonly known as the mamaku or black tree fern, the Cyathea Medullaris is found in New Zealand and throughout the south-west Pacific.  The Cyathea Medullaris Leaf Extract is a skin-conditioning agent and also stimulates circulation to the skin. 

Dehydroacetic Acid - Dehydroacetic Acid is a fungicide and bactericide predominantly used as a preservative in cosmetics. It works by killing off and preventing the growth of microorganisms that contribute to a product's decay. Dehydroacetic Acid is an Organic compound which is accepted for use in natural cosmetics, offering a broad spectrum of stability.

Euphrasia Officinalis Extract - Euphrasia Officinalis is the botanical name of an annual plant commonly called eyebright.  Eyebright extract is widely used in organic skin care products because of its antibacterial, astringent and anti-inflammatory properties its effect on dark circles, puffiness under the eyes and other facial signs of ageing. The extract can provide relief from acne, irritated or inflamed skin and is particularly effective on oily skin.

Ethylhexylglycerin - Ethylhexylglycerin is a preservative that is used as an alternative to parabens. It may not be quite as effective, but it’s believed to be far safer and less detrimental to your health than parabens.  As its name suggests, ethylhexylglycerin is made using glycerin. Glycerin is a simple polyol compound derived from sugar alcohol. It is both colorless and odorless, and it is one of the most common ingredients in your skincare products.

Glycerin - Vegetable derived, glycerin is a natural humectant, drawing and keeping moisture in as well as pulling oxygen into the skin.  It also prevents skincare products from drying out in the container.

Glyceryl Stearate - Glyceryl Stearate is derived from palm kernel, vegetable or soy oil and is also found naturally in the human body. It acts as a lubricant on the skin’s surface, which gives the skin a soft and smooth appearance. It easily penetrates the skin and slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface. Glyceryl Stearate has been shown to protect skin from free-radical damage as well.

Green Tea Extract - Contains polyphenols that are very powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. They inhibit collagenase, the enzyme that causes degradation of collagen. It also contains methylxanthines (alkaloids) that assist with reducing redness, irritation, and inflammation. Green Tea Extract is twenty times stronger than the beneficial plant chemicals that are found in vitamin E. It protects the skin cells from damage by free radicals and UVB damage.

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil - Rich in antioxidants, Vitamin A, C and E and anti-ageing nutrients zinc, calcium, iron, Omega-6 fatty acids, palmitic acid and copper. Sunflower Seed Oil is also rich in carotenoids, potent antioxidants, which help cleanse your skin and help in acne control. It contains essential fatty acids - linoleic and oleic acid, attributed to boosting the production of skin cells. Sunflower is also a good source of beta-carotene, which has shown in studies to help make the skin less sensitive to the sun. This and other antioxidants help shield the skin from environmental damage while preventing premature signs of aging.

Lauryl Glucoside - Lauryl glucoside is a plant-based surfactant produced by combining palm/coconut oils with corn glucose.

Due to its mild properties, lauryl glucoside is known to be gentle on skin.

Lecithin - Lecithin is a natural lipid that occurs in most living cells. It works as an emulsifier and delivery system to transport moisture to the deeper dermal layers and stimulates the production of Hyaluronic acid. It also acts as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, assists with lightening and brightening and sun damage protection.

Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed or Flaxseed) Seed Oil - Containing essential fatty acids, such as linoleic acid and linolenic acid, as well as unsaturated fatty acids, such as oleic acid, it keeps the skin soft and contributes to a glowing complexion.  Flaxseed is very high in the natural antioxidant vitamin E, and is used to help prevent scarring and stretch marks. Due to its high inflammatory index, flaxseed oil helps minimize skin irritation, redness and inflammation. The essential fatty acids in flaxseed oil smooths the skin’s appearance and makes it super soft.

Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil -  High in Omega 7, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil plays a huge role in replenishing palmitoleic acid.   Palmitoleic Acid (Omega 7) is an active antimicrobial that is found naturally in our youthful skin. Palmitoleic Acid levels in our skin reduce with age, contributing to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and weathered skin. Also rich in Linoleic Acid (Omega 6) - a fatty acid that greatly benefits the skin by restoring the barrier function and reducing water loss, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil has excellent spreadability, lubrication and penetration properties. It also has a slight sunscreen effect and is high in monounsaturated fatty acids, including Oleic Acid (Omega 9), which are very moisturising, regenerating and softening on the skin. These fatty acids also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Mentha Arvensis (Wild Mint) Leaf Oil - Wild Mint Oil is derived from the leaves of the Mentha Arvensis plant and used as a fragrance and flavouring. 

Parfum - We use Geraniol, Limonene and Linlool - all components of natural essential oils.

Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil -  Avocado oil assists in transporting active ingredients into the skin.  It has a high penetration rate in spite of its thick consistency and is bactericidal and may even increase collagen in connective tissue.

Pelargonium Graveolens Oil - Geranium Essential Oil (Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil) has stimulating and regenerating properties making this essential oil a fantastic skincare element for all skin types.  Geranium essential oil is very useful for normalising excessively dry or oily skin.

Phenoxyethanol - Phenoxyethanol is a common cosmetics preservative that is considered one of the least sensitising for use in formulations. Phenoxyethanol is approved worldwide (including in Japan and in the EU) for use in all types of water-based cosmetics. Although the phenoxyethanol used in skincare products is almost always synthetic, this chemical occurs naturally in green tea.

Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate -  A plant based ingredient used as a skin conditioning agent, emulsifying agent and surfactant.

Polysorbate 20 – Polysorbate 20 is a solubilizer and stabilizer, acts as a lubricator, and has a soothing effect on the skin.  It is derived from Lauric Acid (a fatty acid, or lipid, that makes up about half of the fatty acids within coconut oil) and sometimes derived from fruits and berries as well, leading to its fragrant properties.

Potassium Sorbate -  Potassium sorbate is a salt of sorbic acid. It’s a natural organic compound found in the berries of the mountain ash, and acts as a preservative in foods, drinks, dietary supplements, personal care products, and cosmetics.

Pseudowintera Colorata (Horopito) Leaf Extract Oil - Horopito is one of the world’s oldest flowering plants, and is found in mountainous and coastal New Zealand.  Horopito is an excellent antioxidant and conditioning agent, and a powerful antifungal.

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil  - Castor oil is the oil extracted from the seeds of the "Miracle Tree", the wild shrub from the family Euphorbiaceae found in West Asia and East Africa.

Castor Seed Oil has the ability to penetrate deep into the horny layer of the skin and spreads out in the intercellular space between the corneocytes.  It is very adhesive and water resistant and therefore great for the skin and hair, protecting it from external influences.

Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract - Rosemary Leaf Extract prevents the oxidation of essential fatty acids in oils. It is an excellent regenerative oil for mature, dry skin. Its lipolytic effects also make it useful when treating acne and oily skin.

Rosa Canina (Rose Hip) Fruit Oil - Rosa Canina Seed Extract is an extract of the seeds of the wild rose, also known as dog rose or rosa canina. For centuries rosa canina seeds have been used by native tribes for its medicinal benefits. wild rose hips (the seed that is left after the petals fall off) demonstrate significant repairing action on fine lines and pigmentation disorders. A source of linoleic and linolenic acid, Rose Hip Oil has excellent moisturizing properties, as well as healing and softening properties. Furthermore wild rose hips also contain vitamins A, D and E, as well as essential fatty acids, and high levels of antioxidant flavonoids, well known for their anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti allergenic properties.

Rose Essential Oil -  This fragrant, pink-flowering plant yields Rose petals that provide the precious Rose essential oil, regarded to be more precious than gold. Rose Oil consists of over 400 components of essential oils, not all of which have been identified to date. In Greek mythology Roses are associated with the love goddess, Venus, as well as a symbol for resurrection. Romans associated roses with romance and happiness, crowning marital partners with rose wreaths and scattering them at the feet of heroes. This prized oil possesses harmonizing aroma therapeutic properties, promoting inner relaxation, balance and sleep. It is also one of the most beneficial and skin-friendly natural essential oils. Rose Oil is also known for its healing and antiseptic properties.

Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Seed Oil - Raspberry seed oil is a luxurious oil,  providing moisturizing, occlusive, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits for skin.

Salicylic Acid - Used in a very small percentage as a natural preservative.

Sclerocarya Birrea (Marula) Seed Oil - One of Africa’s most notable skin care oils, Marula is particularly good for dry skin.  It is rapidly absorbed, reducing Transepidermal Water Loss and is good for skin rejuvenation. Antioxidant rich, Marula Seed Oil improves moisture balance and elasticity of the skin. Marula oil naturally softens, nourishes and revitalises the skin. It is easily absorbed and contains high proportions of oleic acid and linoleic fatty acid, making it ideal for topical application. It is high in natural antioxidants and one of the most stable oils available.

Schinziophyton Rautanenii (Mongongo) Kernel Oil -   Mongongo Kernel Oil is used for UV and environmental protection. The mongongo tree (Schinziophyton Rautanenii) is a member of the Euphorbia family. A large, spreading tree, it reaches 15-20 metres tall and is found on wooded hills and amongst sand dunes, particularly on Kalahari sand soils. It is adapted to withstand several years of drought and temperatures that range from -5 ̊C in winter to well over 40 ̊C in summer.  The bright yellow oil pressed from the seeds of the mongongo tree contains high levels of vitamin E (tocopherol), linoleic and eleostearic acids, making it a very useful oil for skin protection. It is effective not only for hydrating the skin but also for restructuring and regenerating the epidermis.

Sodium Acrylates Copolymer (Lecigel)

 – Innovative phospholipid-based gelling agent with emulsifying properties and cooling effects.

Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate - A hypoallergenic amino acid that is used as an emulsifier or emollient, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate is derived from Coconut and Glutamic Acid.

Sorbic Acid - Sorbic Acid is a preservative derived from mountain ash berries or manufactured synthetically. Sorbic acid is used in many beauty and skin-care products,  foods and even in contact lens solutions.

Sorbitol - a naturally occurring sugar alcohol, Sorbitol is found in fruits and plants.  Sorbitol prevents moisture loss by pulling water by osmosis from the air and hydrating the skin.

Sorbitan Olivate - Sorbitan olivate is a unique natural PEG-free emulsifier derived from Olive oil. It reduces skin water loss, has a high moisturizing effect, is hypoallergenic and biomimics the skin.  Sorbitan Olivate facilitates the retention of skin moisture and increases the active ingredients resistance to water and/or sweat.

Squalene (Olive)  - Squalene is naturally found in the skin.  Squalene is the skin’s principal lipid, natural emollient, built-in moisturiser and skin antioxidant. The amount of Squalene in the skin diminishes with age, and is exacerbated by modern living and environmental factors.

Trichilia Emetica Seed Butter - Trichilia emetica – also known as the Cape Mahogany – is a beautiful slow-growing hardwood tree that grows up to 30m in height. It is evergreen with dark glossy leaves, red-brown bark and fragrant creamy yellow flowers. The trichilia tree is found across Southern Africa in low altitude, frost-free areas, mainly along rivers and the coast.  The pear-shaped fruits dry out and split into three segments, hence the name trichilia which means ‘in three parts’. Inside the fruits are bright red seeds that are rich in oil. The oil, often called mafura butter is renowned for its cosmetic and healing properties. It is used on the skin to nourish and revitalise as well as to condition the hair. The butter is also used medicinally to treat rheumatism and heal wounds.

Tocopheryl Acetate - natural vitamin E provides a strong antioxidant that helps protect the skin against free radical damage caused by pollution and other external aggressors to promote skin vitality.
